China\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> top diplomat has sharply criticized the United States for acting like a \u201cworld judge<\/a><\/strong>\u201d after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong><\/a> and brought him to New York to face trial. Beijing confronted Washington at the United Nations<\/strong>, challenging the legality of the dramatic operation and warning it could undermine global diplomatic norms.<\/p>\n

China adheres to a strict policy of non-intervention<\/strong> and often opposes military actions taken without approval from the UN Security Council. The U.S. military\u2019s overnight removal of Maduro \u2014 the leader of one of China\u2019s closest strategic partners \u2014 has become a key moment in testing China\u2019s claim that it can help address international crises without resorting to force.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have never believed that any country can act as the world\u2019s police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world\u2019s judge,\u201d Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi<\/strong><\/a> said during a meeting in Beijing on Sunday with his Pakistani counterpart. While he did not explicitly name the United States, Wang referenced the \u201csudden developments in Venezuela\u201d and stressed that \u201cthe sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected under international law.\u201d These comments were his first since global reactions surged after images circulated showing a blindfolded and handcuffed 63-year-old Maduro.<\/p>\n

Sun Lei<\/strong>, charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires of China\u2019s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, urged restraint and emphasized that \u201cmilitary means are not the solution to problems,\u201d warning that the use of force can intensify global crises.<\/p>\n

Analysts say China\u2019s diplomatic stance is significant. As the world\u2019s second-largest economy and a major partner to many developing nations, China\u2019s rhetoric could play a crucial role in shaping global criticism of the United States. \u201cThere isn\u2019t much in the way of material support that China can offer Venezuela at this time, but rhetorically, Beijing will be very important when it leads the effort at the UN and with other developing countries to rally opinion against the U.S.,\u201d said Eric Olander<\/strong>, co-founder of the China-Global South Project.<\/p>\n
