{"id":587,"date":"2026-01-10T06:11:32","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T06:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/?p=587"},"modified":"2026-01-10T06:11:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T06:11:32","slug":"syrian-military-expands-aleppo-operations-targeting-sdf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/?p=587","title":{"rendered":"Syrian Military Expands Aleppo Operations Targeting SDF","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"809\">The Syrian army is engaged in intense clashes in the northern city of Aleppo after Kurdish-led <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Syrian Democratic Forces<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong> (SDF) fighters declined to withdraw under a temporary ceasefire, triggering renewed violence and a growing humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"1033\">Aleppo\u2019s emergency response chief, Mohammed al-Rajab, told <strong data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"911\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/span><\/strong> Arabic that at least 162,000 residents have fled the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhoods as fighting intensified.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1207\">A Syrian military source said government forces are advancing in Sheikh Maqsoud\u2014where the heaviest clashes have occurred\u2014and now control roughly 55 percent of the district.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1571\">State media outlet <strong data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1269\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">SANA<\/span><\/span><\/strong> reported that Syrian forces arrested several SDF members during operations launched after a deadline for Kurdish fighters to evacuate the area expired late Friday. The withdrawal ultimatum had been issued as part of a short-lived ceasefire declared earlier the same day by Syria\u2019s Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1576\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1625\"><strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1625\">Ceasefire breakdown and renewed strikes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1817\">The truce followed three days of fighting that erupted after Damascus and the SDF failed to implement a long-standing agreement to integrate Kurdish forces into the state security structure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"2135\">After some of the fiercest violence since the ouster of Syria\u2019s former leader <a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\"><strong data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1938\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bashar al-Assad<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> last year, Syrian authorities gave Kurdish fighters a six-hour window to withdraw to their semi-autonomous region in northeastern Syria. The move aimed to end Kurdish control over parts of Aleppo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2137\" data-end=\"2352\">Local Kurdish councils governing Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh rejected the ultimatum, saying they would not surrender districts they have administered since the early stages of Syria\u2019s conflict, which began in 2011.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2354\" data-end=\"2590\">The Syrian army later warned residents of renewed strikes, urging civilians to leave via a designated humanitarian corridor. Military maps highlighting targeted areas were published, and shelling reportedly began around two hours later.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2592\" data-end=\"2595\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2641\"><strong data-start=\"2601\" data-end=\"2641\">Conflicting claims and civilian toll<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2956\">As clashes escalated, the SDF posted footage on X that it said showed damage from artillery and drone attacks on Khaled Fajr Hospital in Sheikh Maqsoud, accusing pro-government factions of committing a war crime. Syria\u2019s Defence Ministry, cited by SANA, said the facility was being used as a weapons storage site.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2958\" data-end=\"3120\">The SDF also reported that government-aligned militias attempted to advance into the neighbourhood with tanks but faced what it described as sustained resistance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2958\" data-end=\"3120\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-588 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AA1TOOlg-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Syrian Military Expands Aleppo Operations Targeting SDF\" width=\"1015\" height=\"673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AA1TOOlg-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AA1TOOlg-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AA1TOOlg.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3362\">Later, the Syrian army said three soldiers were killed and 12 wounded in SDF attacks. It also alleged that Kurdish fighters had killed more than 10 local youths who refused to join them\u2014claims the SDF dismissed as \u201clies and disinformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3364\" data-end=\"3600\">Since fighting erupted earlier this week, at least 22 people have been killed and 173 injured in Aleppo, according to local authorities. Syria\u2019s civil defence agency said displacement from the city has now reached nearly 160,000 people.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3602\" data-end=\"3605\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"3607\" data-end=\"3636\"><strong data-start=\"3611\" data-end=\"3636\">Deep-rooted divisions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3638\" data-end=\"3878\">The violence has highlighted a key fault line in post-Assad Syria, as Kurdish forces controlling large parts of the oil-rich northeast resist integration into the central government under President <strong data-start=\"3836\" data-end=\"3877\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Ahmed al-Sharaa<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"4059\">An integration agreement signed in March last year envisioned the SDF joining the Defence Ministry by the end of 2025, but officials in Damascus say little progress has been made.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4061\" data-end=\"4258\">Senior Al Jazeera analyst <strong data-start=\"4087\" data-end=\"4128\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Marwan Bishara<\/span><\/span><\/strong> said mutual distrust remains high, particularly over how Kurdish fighters\u2014including women\u2014would be absorbed into the Syrian army.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4260\" data-end=\"4263\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"4265\" data-end=\"4308\"><strong data-start=\"4269\" data-end=\"4308\">Regional and international reaction<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4310\" data-end=\"4516\">Amid the clashes, al-Sharaa held a phone call with Turkish President <strong data-start=\"4379\" data-end=\"4420\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, reaffirming his intention to eliminate what Damascus calls \u201cillegal armed presence\u201d in Aleppo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4518\" data-end=\"4832\">Turkiye, which considers the SDF an extension of the <strong data-start=\"4571\" data-end=\"4612\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">PKK<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, has previously warned it could intervene militarily if integration efforts fail. Defence Minister <strong data-start=\"4712\" data-end=\"4753\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Yasar Guler<\/span><\/span><\/strong> said Ankara supports Syria\u2019s campaign against what it labels terrorist groups.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4834\" data-end=\"5078\">Meanwhile, the <strong data-start=\"4849\" data-end=\"4890\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">United Nations<\/span><\/span><\/strong> voiced serious concern.
