Yet the crisis has laid bare a deeper contradiction: Denmark is mobilising diplomatic support to protect a territory whose population favours independence and whose largest opposition party has floated the idea of negotiating directly with Washington.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1519\">\u201cDenmark risks spending a great deal of foreign policy capital to defend Greenland, only to see it leave in the end,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1473\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, a professor at the University of Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1524\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1554\"><strong data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1554\">Strategic importance<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1748\">Greenland\u2019s value to Denmark is closely tied to its strategic position between Europe and North America, making it central to Arctic geopolitics and to the US ballistic missile defence system.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"2016\">Letting Greenland go would significantly diminish Denmark\u2019s influence in the Arctic. At the same time, Copenhagen could find itself with little to show for its efforts if Greenlanders ultimately vote for independence or pursue their own arrangements with Washington.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2353\">The implications stretch beyond Denmark alone. European allies have rallied behind Copenhagen not only out of solidarity, but also out of concern that any erosion of Greenland\u2019s status could set a precedent for powerful countries asserting territorial claims over smaller states, challenging the post-World War Two international order.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2612\">Denmark\u2019s foreign ministry declined to comment on the situation, referring instead to joint remarks made in December by Danish Prime Minister <strong data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2538\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mette Frederiksen<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and Greenlandic Prime Minister <strong data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2611\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2798\">\u201cNational borders and state sovereignty are anchored in international law,\u201d the two leaders said at the time. \u201cYou cannot annex another country. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2975\">Frederiksen reiterated this week that any US attack on a NATO member would fundamentally undermine the alliance and the security framework it has provided since World War Two.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2977\" data-end=\"2980\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3018\"><strong data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3018\">Playing the \u2018Greenland card\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3020\" data-end=\"3155\">The Trump administration has said it is considering all options regarding Greenland, including purchasing the territory or using force.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3157\" data-end=\"3308\">Rasmussen said outrage over Trump\u2019s rhetoric has effectively sidelined debate in Denmark about whether the cost of holding on to Greenland is worth it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3406\">\u201cIt\u2019s not really being discussed. I worry we\u2019ve entered a kind of patriotic overdrive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3408\" data-end=\"3730\">During the Cold War, Greenland\u2019s strategic location gave Denmark disproportionate influence in Washington, allowing it to maintain relatively low defence spending for a NATO member. The island gained greater autonomy and its own parliament in 1979, and a 2009 agreement formally recognised Greenlanders\u2019 right to independence should they choose it. While all Greenlandic political parties support independence in principle, they differ over the pace and pathway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4081\" data-end=\"4273\">Trump\u2019s renewed pressure has accelerated an already uncertain timeline, forcing Denmark to invest political and financial resources into a relationship whose end point is increasingly unclear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4275\" data-end=\"4445\">\u201cHow much should we fight for someone who doesn\u2019t really want to stay with us?\u201d asked political commentator and former lawmaker <strong data-start=\"4403\" data-end=\"4444\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Joachim B. Olsen<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4447\" data-end=\"4450\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"4452\" data-end=\"4480\"><strong data-start=\"4456\" data-end=\"4480\">The financial strain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4482\" data-end=\"4647\">Denmark provides Greenland with an annual block grant of about 4.3 billion Danish crowns ($610 million), supporting an economy that grew by just 0.2 percent in 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4649\" data-end=\"4911\">The central bank estimates Greenland faces an annual funding gap of roughly 800 million crowns to keep public finances sustainable.
