From AI-led interviews to auto-generated cover letters, the technology is becoming deeply embedded in hiring \u2014 but its impact may be doing more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"973\">More than half of organizations surveyed by the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Society for Human Resource Management<\/span><\/span> reported using AI in recruitment in 2025. At the same time, roughly a third of users of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\" xlink=\"href\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">OpenAI<\/span><\/span>\u2019s <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">ChatGPT<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong> are estimated to rely on the tool during their job search. While adoption is accelerating on both sides, outcomes are becoming increasingly strained.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1034\"><strong data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1034\">AI Makes It Harder to Identify the Best Candidates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1036\" data-end=\"1277\">Recent academic research suggests that applicants who use AI in the hiring process may actually be less likely to be hired. Meanwhile, employers are being flooded with applications, making it harder to distinguish truly qualified candidates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1279\" data-end=\"1526\">\u201cThe ability for companies to select the best worker today may actually be worse because of AI,\u201d said <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\" xlink=\"href\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Ana\u00efs Galdin<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>, a researcher at Dartmouth who co-authored a study examining the impact of large language models on hiring.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1908\">Galdin and her co-author, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jesse Silbert<\/span><\/span>, analyzed tens of thousands of cover letters submitted through <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Freelancer.com<\/span><\/span>. Their findings showed that after ChatGPT\u2019s release in 2022, cover letters became longer and more polished \u2014 but employers began to trust them less. As a result, hiring rates fell, along with average starting wages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"2035\">\u201cIf nothing improves how information flows between workers and firms, outcomes like this become more likely,\u201d Silbert warned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"2035\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Stop-Hiring-Humans-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"AI hiring is here. According to a survey by recruiting software firm <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Greenhouse<\/span><\/span>, 54% of US job seekers said they have participated in an AI-led interview. While virtual interviews surged during the pandemic, replacing human interviewers with algorithms has not eliminated bias.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2455\" data-end=\"2639\">\u201cAlgorithms can replicate and even amplify human bias,\u201d said <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Djurre Holtrop<\/span><\/span>, who studies AI-driven interview systems. \u201cDevelopers need to be extremely cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2865\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Daniel Chait<\/span><\/span>, CEO of Greenhouse, described the current situation as a \u201cdoom loop,\u201d where applicants automate applications and employers respond with more automation \u2014 leaving both sides dissatisfied.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2941\">\u201cEveryone feels like the process is broken and getting worse,\u201d Chait said.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"2999\"><strong data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"2999\">Regulation and Legal Challenges Begin to Emerge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3001\" data-end=\"3411\">Despite concerns, investment in recruitment technology continues to grow, with the market projected to reach $3.1 billion this year. Still, labor groups and lawmakers are pushing back. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Liz Shuler<\/span><\/span>, president of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">AFL-CIO<\/span><\/span>, called AI hiring practices \u201cunacceptable,\u201d arguing they can deny qualified workers opportunities based on arbitrary data points.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3727\">Several US states, including California, Colorado, and Illinois, have begun introducing regulations governing AI use in hiring. However, a recent executive order by <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/span> has added uncertainty to the regulatory landscape, even as existing anti-discrimination laws remain in force.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3729\" data-end=\"3971\">Legal challenges are already emerging. In a case supported by the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/span><\/span>, a deaf woman is suing <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">HireVue<\/span><\/span> over claims that an automated interview violated accessibility standards.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3973\" data-end=\"4021\"><strong data-start=\"3978\" data-end=\"4021\">The Human Cost of AI-Driven Recruitment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4023\" data-end=\"4302\">Even as AI tools improve resume screening and help surface overlooked talent, many job seekers worry about the loss of human judgment in hiring. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jared Looper<\/span><\/span>, an IT project manager based in Utah, described his AI-led interview as \u201ccold\u201d and impersonal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4304\" data-end=\"4485\">\u201cSome great people are going to be left behind,\u201d Looper said, capturing a growing concern that navigating AI systems is becoming as important as actual skills in today\u2019s job market.<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the US labor market cools, artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how people apply for jobs and how companies recruit.
