Germany<\/a><\/strong> must look beyond its traditional allies and actively seek new international partners as the global order becomes more unstable, the country\u2019s economy minister said on Tuesday, pointing to strained relations with the United States and the impact of rising tariffs.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Handelsblatt energy summit, Katherina Reiche<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> said long-standing alliances could no longer be taken for granted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world has become more uncertain, and the alliances we have relied on are starting to crumble,\u201d Reiche said. \u201cThat does not mean turning away from them, but continuing to cooperate \u2014 even when it is difficult \u2014 while also seeking out new partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shift Driven by US Trade Tensions<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Reiche\u2019s comments reflect growing concern in Berlin over the future role of the United States<\/span><\/span><\/strong> following the imposition of import tariffs by President Donald Trump<\/span><\/span><\/strong> on key allies, including European Union<\/span><\/span><\/strong>** and Canada<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The tariffs have added pressure to Germany\u2019s export-driven economy and reinforced calls for broader trade diversification.<\/p>\n

Reiche said potential partners include countries in South America, India<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the Middle East, Canada, Australia<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and parts of Asia, including Malaysia<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Economic Growth Remains Fragile<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The economy minister warned that expanding economic alliances is critical for Germany\u2019s long-term growth prospects. She said Europe\u2019s largest economy is currently expecting only modest expansion, largely driven by debt-financed spending on defence and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about growth of 1% to 1.5%,\u201d Reiche said. \u201cThat is not sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lower Growth Forecast Expected<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Germany\u2019s government is expected to revise its economic outlook on Wednesday, with growth projections for 2026 likely to be cut to 1.0% from a previous estimate of 1.3%, according to a source familiar with the matter. Growth in 2027 is projected at around 1.3%.<\/p>\n
