Ankush, only 18 and fresh out of high school, had arrived in the city from eastern Bihar for his first job. He had rented an electric bike and signed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\"><strong data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1070\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Swiggy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>, one of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\">India<\/a><\/strong> largest quick-commerce firms. It was his first day delivering in a metropolitan city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1174\" data-end=\"1354\">\u201cHe was switching between the phone and the road, trying to meet the deadline,\u201d Pal recalled. \u201cThen there was a traffic signal, a customer calling \u2014 and suddenly, the car hit him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1442\">Fellow riders pooled money for an ambulance to send Ankush\u2019s body back to his village.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1447\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1489\"><strong data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1489\">Fast Delivery, Fatal Consequences<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1898\">India\u2019s rapid-delivery sector has become a global phenomenon, promising groceries, food, medicines and even cigarettes within minutes to the country\u2019s expanding middle class. Platforms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\"><strong data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1725\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Zomato<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>, Zepto and Flipkart Minutes have intensified competition, while <a href=\"https:\/\/al-ahwaz.com\/\"><strong data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1831\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Amazon<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/a>entered the market in late 2024 with a 15-minute delivery service.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"2107\">Some companies openly advertised 10-minute delivery guarantees, while others quietly pushed riders to meet similar timelines. Riders say those deadlines turned India\u2019s congested roads into deadly workplaces.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2109\" data-end=\"2392\">Road accidents involving delivery workers are frequently excluded from official workplace fatality counts, unions say. India\u2019s gig economy, valued at $11.5bn, is expected to triple its workforce by 2030, according to government estimates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3477\" data-end=\"3614\">Last year alone, quick-commerce orders reached $7bn \u2014 more than double the previous year \u2014 making the sector a favourite among investors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3815\">But analysts say this growth is underpinned by deep income inequality, allowing companies to keep large numbers of riders waiting unpaid between orders, without guaranteed wages or social protection.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3817\" data-end=\"3820\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3866\"><strong data-start=\"3825\" data-end=\"3866\">\u2018The System Forces Us to Ride Faster\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3868\" data-end=\"3952\">Riders argue that removing a marketing slogan does little to change daily realities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3954\" data-end=\"4134\">\u201cThe maths is simple,\u201d said delivery rider Pankaj Kumar in Noida. \u201cMore deliveries mean more money. To earn, we ride faster \u2014 even if it means breaking rules or risking our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4136\" data-end=\"4325\">Kumar fractured his shoulder last year while on a delivery. He said no financial support was provided, and he returned to work days later with his arm in plaster to avoid losing incentives.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4327\" data-end=\"4433\">\u201cWe\u2019re treated like machines on bikes,\u201d he said. \u201cIf one rider disappears, the system just replaces them.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4435\" data-end=\"4438\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"4440\" data-end=\"4476\"><strong data-start=\"4443\" data-end=\"4476\">Labour Reforms Still on Paper<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4478\" data-end=\"4687\">India is drafting new labour laws that would formally recognise gig workers and offer social security benefits, including accident insurance and pensions. For now, those protections remain largely theoretical.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4689\" data-end=\"4879\">Union leaders say collective action remains the only way riders can push back.
