U.S. President Donald Trump<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> on Friday selected former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> to serve as the next chair of the U.S. central bank when Jerome Powell<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s<\/a> leadership term expires in May.<\/p>\n

The decision places a long-time critic of current Federal Reserve policy at the helm of an institution Trump has repeatedly accused of resisting his calls for sharp interest-rate cuts. Warsh has argued the central bank needs a fundamental \u201cregime change\u201d to restore credibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve known Kevin for a long time, and I have no doubt he\u2019ll be one of the great Fed chairmen\u2014maybe the best,\u201d Trump said in a social media post announcing the nomination. \u201cHe will never let you down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Markets React Cautiously<\/h4>\n

Financial markets responded quickly. Global equities edged higher, the dollar strengthened and gold prices fell following the announcement. The investigation has complicated the path forward. Republican Senator Thom Tillis<\/span><\/span><\/strong> has said he will not support any Fed nominees while the probe continues, while Senator Lisa Murkowski<\/span><\/span><\/strong> has called for scrutiny of the department\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

The controversy has also raised the possibility that Powell could remain on the Fed\u2019s Board of Governors after his chair term ends\u2014a rare step that could limit Trump\u2019s ability to reshape the institution quickly. Powell\u2019s term as a governor runs through 2028.<\/p>\n

Months-Long Selection Process Ends<\/h4>\n

Warsh\u2019s nomination concludes a months-long process that often played out in public, with contenders such as White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Fed Governor Christopher Waller<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and BlackRock executive Rick Rieder<\/span><\/span><\/strong> regularly outlining their views on monetary policy.<\/p>\n

A lawyer and visiting fellow at Hoover Institution<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Warsh has argued that the Fed has underestimated the disinflationary impact of productivity gains driven by artificial intelligence. He supports substantial rate cuts and has called for a broad restructuring of the central bank, including reducing its balance sheet and easing banking regulations.<\/p>\n

Warsh, 55, was a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011 and served as a key liaison to Wall Street during the 2007\u20132009 financial crisis under then-chair Ben Bernanke<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. While he supported crisis-era measures at the time, he later expressed concern that large-scale bond purchases could fuel inflation and ultimately resigned.<\/p>\n

Policy Impact Unclear\u2014for Now<\/h4>\n

It remains uncertain how Warsh\u2019s appointment would affect interest rates in the near term. The Fed cut rates three times in 2025, bringing its benchmark range to 3.50%\u20133.75%. This week, policymakers left rates unchanged, citing solid growth and a stabilising labour market, and signalled no urgency to resume easing.<\/p>\n

Markets currently expect any further rate cut to come no earlier than mid-June, when Warsh would be poised to take over.<\/p>\n

With deep ties to Wall Street\u2014including past work managing investments linked to Stanley Druckenmiller<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014and family connections to Trump ally Ron Lauder<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Warsh is likely to face intense scrutiny over his independence from the White House.<\/p>\n

In follow-up posts, Trump said he kept Hassett at the White House because of his performance there, adding that all finalists for the Fed job would continue to play roles in his administration.<\/p>\n
